For his part, Shuttleworth was attracted by the challenge of the project. New apartments were created by extending the building horizontally, with a new full-height block to the mews and replacing an existing penthouse level with a new structure on top. A highly modelled, brass-clad elevation enhances the appearance of the structure and brings new interest to this pocket of urban space. "We quite enjoy that sort of project: quite intricate, difficult, challenging; not straightforward."
He was also keen to create a building with minimal environmental impact: a central aim of all Make's work. The "love affair with the glass wall" - including his own - has come to an end, he believes:
"The Modern movement, when we went away from solid buildings in the 1920s, has basically gone through a whole evolution of just glass curtain walls. And energy was never a consideration."
As well as looking glorious, the brass cladding at 10 Weymouth Street plays an important role in reducing energy, he reveals.
"The cladding is very, very well insulated, so we reduce the amount of heat loss. And it makes financial sense as well - why heat a space when you don't need to? Also, brass is a totally recyclable material."
He goes on, "Brass is a natural material which is a combination of zinc and copper, and by getting the mixture 15 per cent zinc / 85 per cent copper, you get a very luxuriant surface, which will patina to what I think will be a very beautiful finish."
